About Me
Kenya Hutton, MPH, is a nationally recognized social justice, public health, and equity leader with more than 20 years of experience advancing the health, dignity, and visibility of Black LGBTQ+/SGL communities. He currently serves as President and CEO of the Center for Black Equity, the global organization dedicated to advancing equity, human rights, and social justice for Black LGBTQ+ people and the producer of DC Black Pride, the world’s first and longest-running Black Pride celebration.
Throughout his career, Kenya has worked at the intersection of HIV prevention, sexual health, racial justice, LGBTQ+ liberation, and community-centered leadership. His work has focused on addressing the social determinants of health that impact communities disproportionately affected by HIV, stigma, poverty, housing insecurity, substance use, and systemic inequity. He has been a leading advocate for culturally responsive HIV prevention, treatment access, and care models that meet people where they are.
Kenya’s leadership is deeply rooted in the House and Ballroom community. As a co-founder of the Capitol Ballroom Council, Inc., he helped build infrastructure for ballroom leaders to design programming, advocate for resources, and strengthen community-led responses to public health challenges. His work has included expanding access to Community Health Worker certification pathways, elevating conversations around substance use and harm reduction, and mobilizing support during public health emergencies, including COVID-19 and MPOX.
As President and CEO of the Center for Black Equity, Kenya is helping lead a new era of the Black Pride movement. His work focuses on strengthening Black Pride organizations around the world, building sustainable funding models, expanding HIV prevention and care partnerships, and ensuring that Black LGBTQ+ convenings are recognized as more than celebrations—they are essential spaces for health access, civic engagement, cultural preservation, leadership development, and collective power.
Kenya’s leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Capital Pride Honors Hero Award, the Chairman’s Award from Us Helping Us, People Into Living, Inc., the Dorian Corey Wisdom Award, the Michael J. Harrington Humanitarian Award, the Award of Excellence from the Washington DC Ballroom Coalition, the DC Black Pride President’s Award, and BLAQUE/OUT Magazine’s Best of 2025 LGBTQIA+ Activist of the Year.
A scholar-practitioner, Kenya holds a Master of Public Health and is a Doctor of Business Administration candidate. His research explores emotional intelligence, inclusive change leadership, and the lived leadership experiences of Black LGBTQ+ business leaders. Across every role, Kenya remains committed to building systems that honor Black LGBTQ+ brilliance, protect community-led movements, and create lasting pathways toward health, equity, and liberation.
